What is a Fat Transfer?

A fat transfer, also known as fat injections, is a cosmetic procedure whereby excess fat is first removed from various parts of the patient's body such as thighs, buttocks, or abdomen. It is then processed and re-injected into areas of deficiency. The excess fat cells are carefully and precisely re-injected into areas where there has been volume loss due the natural aging process and life's "wear and tear." Your newly volumized, youthful face will be noticeable immediately. Common targets of fat transfer include facial creases such as laugh lines, marionette lines, frown lines, hollows under the eyes, crow's feet, lips, wrinkles in the forehead and cheeks.

Fat transfer has also been used to successfully correct depressions and scars from acne. There are three simple steps involved in this minimally invasive procedure.

  • Gentle liposuction of excess fat (such as the fat found in the thighs, buttocks or abdomen)
  • Isolation and purification of the harvested fat
  • Injection of the purified fat with stem cells into the targeted areas where volume loss has occurred

How Long Will My Results Last?

Generally, the results of a fat injection last considerably longer than dermal fillers. The effects can last from several months to several years or more. In some patients, the results are permanent, making this the optimum choice for many.

According to Dr. Marcus, fat transfers are increasingly popular because they are a minimally invasive procedure that can produce dramatic, natural looking results. For many patients, fat transfer is a wonderful alternative to dermal fillers, as there is less chance for the body to reject its own fat.

This is a very important factor in considering a fat transfer-as the patient is using his own fat and not a foreign substance, such as one of the many dermal fillers on the market, there is no possibility of an allergic reaction and very little chance of any adverse reaction.

Recovery and Healing

Once your fat transfer is complete, you will experience some bruising and swelling along with slight discomfort. The majority of swelling and bruising tends to subside after just a few days, and the results begin to manifest.

Dr. Marcus generally recommends that his patients rest for the first 24 hours after a fat transfer, keeping rigorous activity to a minimum while still remaining mobile. Cold compresses, anti-inflammatory medications, and Arnica Montana may be used to help reduce the bruising and swelling and speed up recovery time. Most patients are back to work and routine activity within a week.
